For our english readers (thanks a million to Uschi for the translation!)
Jo Krasevich is an incredibly kind and wonderful person. Unfortunately, her beloved dog called Toulouse ran away in Paris, as she told us after her show case at the Gibert Joseph CD-Store. The Detroit born, tall and charismatic American woman who resides in Paris, Los Angeles und Montreal shared some other moments of her life with us: life on tour, the clash with her former record label, the show she played last night when she was supporting Ray La Montagne at Café de la Danse. She mentioned that it was her second concert in Paris, after playing at New Morning jazz club a few months ago. But who is Jo Krasevich actually? I hadn’t heard the name until only shortly before this acoustic set at Gibert; I admit that she was a dark horse to me. X-Roads magazine, on the contrary, have dedicated two pages of their current issue to her, including an interesting interview: The daughter of a Yugoslav father and a Quebecois mother speaks about her childhood in Detroit and Ottawa, her short but very successful career as a model (she scored a cover of Elle and posed for Helmut Newton!), a guest appearance at a U2 concert and her fondness for Neil Young’s songwriting skills. And so, the last song of today’s show case was a cover of Neil Young’s Like A Hurricane. Apart from that, she performed several titles off her debut album Merry-Go-Round. The album features, nota bene, Daniel Lanois (producer of Bob Dylan, Neil Young etc.) on the guitar and contains mellow and very comforting, melancholic lo-fi folk songs. I really have enjoyed Jo Krasevich’s voice. She sounded like Suzanne Vega or Anna Ternheim and created a wonderful, intimate mood. I sat very close to the long legged lady anyway, comfortably installed on the floor, right in front of her chocolate brown western boots. "This is a good spot" she said to me from above, and I nodded in agreement.Krasevich played the guitar and also the harmonica, performing titles such has Crazy Love, If I or Fall On Me (NOT a R.E.M. cover!). The songs sounded unaffected and authentic; I liked them on the first listen. Bummer that time passed by so quickly! The set was finished after half a dozen of songs only. Afterwards, I absolutely had to get her album. Its Art Nouveau artwork is well worth the purchase. With a tighter arrangement and pedal steel guitar and fiddle, the songs are more bite-sized in their album versions. I prefer the stripped-down acoustic performance, but the album is not bad at all. I’m glad I got to know Jo Krasevich. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for her and hope that she’ll find her dog!
